Phil Ivey has been referred to as the best poker player on the planet by most of the top-ranked professionals. He was born in Riverside, CA and relocated to NJ before his first birthday. His papa taught him penny-ante 5-Card Stud poker. From then on on, Phil was addicted to poker and wished to learn whatever he could about poker. Phil routinely told his parents that he wanted to be a professional poker player. Phil did not allow the detrimental feedback from others kill his ambition of being one of the greatest poker competitors in the world.
He started competing seriously after acquiring a fake ID by the name of Jerome. He sharpened his skills at the casinos of Atlantic City. The first number of years for him were a learning opportunity and winning was not a common thing at the time. Phil became known at the 2000 WSOP when he achieved two final tables and came away with his first WSOP bracelet, in a $2, 500 Pot-Limit Omaha game. At the final table he defeated many of the well known professionals which includes "Amarillo Slim" Preston, David "Devilfish" Ulliot, and Phil Hellmuth, Jr.
He made a decision to take his skills to the successive level and moved out west to Sin City. He continues to participate in in "The Big Game" at the Bellagio with the greatest players in the world. Ivey credits his success to discipline and an immeasurable passion for the game of poker. Phil says that he is learning every single day and is incredibly humble about his success. He admits to making errors every single session of poker and constantly aspires to get better.
Despite the fact that Ivey has come first in some large tournaments, he prefers winning cash games on a regular basis.
