NL Hold’em Poker- Who is Phil Ivey?
December 19th, 2018 by Holden

Phil Ivey has been labeled as the number one poker player in the world by many of the top pros. He was born in Riverside, CA and relocated to New Jersey before reaching turning 1. His grandfather introduced him to one cent-ante Five-Card Stud poker. From that point on, he was addicted to poker and wished to discover anything he possibly could about the game. He routinely told his elders that he was planning on being a professional poker player. Phil didn’t allow the adverse feedback from other people annihilate his goal of becoming one of the best poker players on the planet.

He started playing seriously after getting a fake ID with the name of Jerome. He sharpened his skills at the poker rooms in Atlantic City. The initial few years for Phil were a learning opportunity and winning was not a normal thing at the time. Phil became known at the 2000 WSOP when he achieved 2 final tables and won his first WSOP bracelet, in a $2, 500 Pot-Limit Omaha event. At the last table he defeated quite a few of the better known pros which includes "Amarillo Slim" Preston, David "Devilfish" Ulliot, and Phil Hellmuth, Jr.

He made a decision to take his skills to the next level and moved out west to Vegas. He continues to compete in in "The Big Game" at the Bellagio with the greatest players on the planet. Phil credits his success to discipline and a continuing love for the game of poker. Phil states that he’s learning every single day and is incredibly abashed about his achievements. Phil admits to making mistakes in each session of poker and always aspires to improve.

Even though Ivey has won some large tournaments, he prefers destroying money games on a normal basis.
