NL Texas Hold’em Poker- Who is Phil Ivey?
April 17th, 2021 by Holden

Phil Ivey has been referred to as the best poker competitor on the planet by most of the top-ranked professionals. He was born in Riverside, CA and relocated to NJ before his first birthday. His grandpa introduced him to penny-ante Five-Card Stud poker. From that point on, he was hooked on poker and wished to learn everything he possibly could about poker. He would tell his grandparents that he was going to be a professional poker player. He did not let the detrimental feedback from others kill his dream of being one of the strongest poker players in the world.

He started playing intently after acquiring a false ID by the name of Jerome. He honed his techniques at the poker rooms of Atlantic City. The initial number of years for him were a learning period and coming away with a win wasn’t a normal thing at the time. Phil made his mark at the 2000 World Series of Poker where he made 2 final tables and won his first WSOP bracelet, in a two dollar, 500 Pot-Limit Omaha match. At the closing table he defeated many of the well known professionals which includes "Amarillo Slim" Preston, David "Devilfish" Ulliot, and Phil Hellmuth, Jr.

He decided to take his skills to the successive level and moved out west to Sin City. He continues to compete in in "The Big Game" at the Bellagio with the best players in the world. Ivey credits his achievements to hard work and an immeasurable love for the game of poker. He says that he is picking up skills every day and is quite humble about his success. He knows he makes blunders in each game of poker and constantly strives to get better.

Even though Phil has come first in some large tournaments, he favors winning cash games on a normal basis.
