Howard Lederer lived in a family of five where he enjoyed playing different card games when he was young. He discovered himself becoming really aggressive in these card games as he was playing his dad. After graduating from Sr. High school, Howard made a decision to place higher education on hold for a little bit and headed to New York to participate in some big-time chess. While participating in chess, he was introduced to a poker game taking place in the back of the room. Howard’s first two years were rough as he played countless hours and fail to win most times. He made some extra cash by being an assistant for the poker players. He believed he could improve his game by analyzing his life away from poker. He brought about an attempt to get more sleep and concentrate more on the game.
The real advancement in his abilities happened when he started playing at the Mayfair Club in New York City. The Mayfair was a bridge and backgammon association where the greatest gamblers would regularly challenge one another. He was able to access a few of the greatest minds in chess. With their help, he would sharpen his strategic thinking abilities. Howard applied these strategy ideas to the game of NL holdem.
Howard also helped his sister Annie Duke learn the game of poker. Annie was a great student of the game as she would always be asking questions about how to make the correct decision. Howard Lederer told Annie Duke to move out to Vegas and compete in the WSOP tournaments. Annie Duke is one of the greatest women players the poker arena today. He relocated to Vegas in 1993 and played money games for the subsequent decade. When the WPT grew in popularity, Howard made the decision to play more tournaments.
